Arto Lindsay undeniably represents one of the key figures of the 80s. Founder of the legendary DNA, a pivotal group of the revolutionary "no-wave" movement, tireless collaborator in numerous "alternative" projects, he was above all a great guitarist, one of the few true intellectuals of rock, capable with his daring blends and his extravagant atonal experiments of opening new paths to "popular music".
Lindsay formed Ambitious Lovers in 1984. Initially, they comprised no less than seven elements (!) to which the Swiss electronic musician Peter Sherer was added. After their excellent debut album, "Envy", only two remained of the eight: Lindsay and Sherer. Their program was to transpose entertainment music onto an avant-garde level, in simple words to produce “cultured” music accessible to everyone. The enterprise was anything but simple, but the magical alchemy that permeates this work demonstrates that it was possible.
The main sources of inspiration are black popular music and South American music. Thus, it transitions from the irresistible energy of the danceable "Privacy", to the twilight bossanova of "Caso" and "Para Nao Contrariar Voce" (sung in Portuguese), full of "saudade brasileira", from the compelling funky-soul of "Copy Me", to the blues dressed as disco-music of "Love Overlap".
There is even a slow track with a tropical flavor like "It Only Has To Happen Once" to make the record even more varied and bizarre.
Greed undoubtedly represents a historical experiment, as well as a record of great quality, the birth of an eccentric and brilliant mind.
Recommended to all fans of Jamiroquai: listen to it and let your ears be the judge.
