ALMACANTA - Revive
(Independent Production/Tunecore)
AlmaCanta is now an established major player in the Italian jazz scene.
After four long years of waiting, the Sardinian band composed of Graziano Solinas, an excellent pianist and composer, and Zaira Zingone, a lyricist and singer with a poetic nature, presents its new venture: Revive.
Accompanied on this journey by Lorenzo Sabattini on bass, Antonio Pitzoi on guitars, Andrea Lubino on drums, and Gian Piero Carta on saxophone, the duo from Sassari has created an intense and impactful work, a concept album about rebirth and awakening.
You encounter sounds with a vaguely vintage jazz aftertaste, light and sweetly crafted, in atmospheres reminiscent of the '20s and '30s, with traces of blues, Balkan music, and elements with a French twist.
However, it is not just an album of pure technique that you encounter; to fully enjoy each piece, one must also let oneself be lulled by the lyrics, made graceful by the warm voice of Zaira Zingone, capable of creating dreamlike atmospheres that immerse the listener in a true sonic experience.
The album opens with Ode To Life, an ode to life in a swing key, followed by Fiore del mattino, where a soft piano slowly opens the doors to a duet between voice and clarinet, which then dissolve into notes of a French-style accordion.
Revive is a muffled piece where Zaira's sweet voice is accompanied by a romantic sax.
Misteri e semplicità takes us back in time as if catapulting the listener into a New York club in the '20s in front of a Big Band.
Luz que brilha brings us back to a jazz closer to our time, while In memoria features distant blues parentheses, and in the soft In Mood, guitar and drums advance in step while piano and voice duet.
Emil lets itself be carried away by the sinuous notes of the sax, and finally, Sogni rincorsi closes the album in an extremely poetic and theatrical manner.
