Allen Toussaint (1938–2015) was a New Orleans–born pianist, songwriter, and producer, a central architect of the city’s R&B sound across the 1960s–2010s. He penned and produced numerous classics, bridged soul, funk, jazz, and pop, and remained an influential bandleader and recording artist.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1998) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2011); received the National Medal of Arts (2013). Wrote standards such as Southern Nights and produced landmark New Orleans R&B recordings.
