Allan Kardec was the pen name of Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail (1804–1869), a French educator and author best known as the systematizer and founder of Spiritism.

Published Le Livre des Esprits (The Spirits) in 1857; authored other principal spiritist works including The Mediums, The Gospel According to Spiritism, Heaven and Hell and Genesis. His writings codified doctrines known as Spiritism and influenced a notable following in Brazil.
