"Walking uneasily between moods and noises
that overlap outside, the only way out is inside"
Three years after the previous "Charade", Alice returns in 1998 with "Exit", a new beginning, an album that sets the artist on a new path, electronic music, for some critics a return to pop, but in reality, an expressive advancement even more challenging than her previous works, with difficult, fragile, and delicate songs.
"Exit" opens a prolific phase for Carla Bissi, three albums in three years, something that hadn't happened since the '80s, new paths to explore that would lead to the perfection of this new musical form with "Viaggio In Italia" in 2003. The track that opens the album is "Dimmi Di Sì", a song that immediately fits into the new context, a track that speaks of love with sublime sophistication, "Every day I receive numerous signals to recognize/in the order of things the element that moves us", all conveyed by a technical and cold sound that contrasts with the subtle melody of the acoustic guitar. "Open Your Eyes" is instead a song written by Peter Hammill and Yuri Camisasca and is sung with Skye from Morcheeba, its beautiful chorus opening manages to give a broad breath to the programmed melody; "Exit" is an album made of reflections, of images, it's remarkably difficult and the music doesn't help, the repetitive progression of many melodic lines, the search for particular effects and the extremely slow rhythms do not facilitate listening, much like the track by Morgan from Bluvertigo, "L'immagine", with a verse that captures the complexity of certain messages, "Sometimes the wrong clothes make you feel uneasy/sometimes the right dress makes you feel wrong". It seems that Alice wants to make her world inaccessible, or perhaps she just wants to filter impressions, not leaving space for direct communication, but forcing the listener to make an effort to enter her songs, Alice does not extend a hand, she doesn’t help you enter, she simply leaves a subtle and imperceptible crack open to most, but once immersed, she manages to give a lot, take "Isole" for example, a wonderful track enriched by the Celtic harp.
Is the period of quirky songs like "Capo Nord" so far away? The openings to the world of "Park Hotel"? The more intimate reflections of "Il Sole Nella Pioggia"? No, the journey followed a precise line that finds in "Exit", "God Is My Dj", "Personal Juke Box", "Viaggio In Italia" a perfect completion, what awaits us in the future is difficult to say, Alice is unpredictable, she recently said she is now totally indifferent to pop music, so we eagerly await her new work.
