Alice Coltrane (born Alice McLeod, 1937–2007) was an American jazz pianist, organist, harpist and composer, noted for spiritual and avant-garde jazz and for her work with John Coltrane. She later adopted the name Turiyasangitananda and led devotional music projects.

Played piano, organ and harp; recorded seminal albums including Journey in Satchidananda and Ptah, the El Daoud; collaborated with John Coltrane and musicians such as Pharoah Sanders; released Translinear Light in 2004; founded an ashram and produced devotional recordings under the name Turiyasangitananda. Born 1937, died 2007.

Two DeBaser reviews emphasize Alice Coltrane's spiritual, meditative and sometimes free-jazz work. Ptah, the El Daoud is praised for its mystery and intense tenor interactions; Translinear Light is described as a warm, autumnal family reunion album. Both reviews recommend immersive, attentive listening.

For:Listeners of spiritual, avant-garde and meditative jazz; fans of John Coltrane and exploratory jazz ensembles.

The archaic cover is already a first warning of the aura of mystery that envelops the music born from this session.

An album that makes no sense to review track by track, but that should be enjoyed in one breath, all in a row, whether gathering in one’s thoughts or calmly doing something else.
