The Profile

Algiers are an American band formed in Atlanta in 2007 by Franklin James Fisher, Ryan Mahan and Lee Tesche, later joined by drummer Matt Tong. Their music fuses post‑punk, gospel, soul and industrial textures. Albums on Matador include Algiers (2015), The Underside of Power (2017), There Is No Year (2020) and Shook (2023).

The band’s name references the film The Battle of Algiers. Their work is noted for politically charged themes including racism, religion and social justice, delivered through a blend of gospel-inflected vocals and abrasive post‑punk/industrial sound.

Three DeBaser reviews chart Algiers’ evolution from the incendiary debut to the expansive There Is No Year and the guest-packed Shook. The band’s blend of gospel-soul vocals with post‑punk and industrial textures is praised for originality and urgency. Themes span anti‑capitalism, racism, religion and resistance. Shook draws mixed reactions for its ensemble feel and length. Overall, the tone is engaged and admiring of their political and sonic intensity.
