A sci-fi film masterfully directed by Alfonso Cuarón, based on the novel of the same name by Phyllis Dorothy James. In a dystopian future, A.D. 2027, where humankind is on the brink of extinction due to the proliferation of racism, wars, violence, and absurdities that have always characterized it, and especially following the complete cessation of births (the last one happening, by the time we start watching, 18 years prior), we follow the desperate escape of a band of characters carrying a special burden.
The film is distinguished by a careful choice of actors (including Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, and Claire-Hope Ashitey among the main ones), surgical and disenchanted hyper-realist direction, impeccable use of various long takes (with a touch of guerrilla journalism), perfectionism in photography, lighting, and set designs (the settings they traverse are superb, immersed in a constant scent of rain and fog, countryside, woods, dilapidated roads, and militarized cities in a pre-apocalyptic Middle Ages).
Two special mentions go to the already noted presence of Michael Caine (who personally, in every movie he appears, even in the form of a small cameo, inexplicably adds that little something extra), and the splendid soundtrack.
