I confess that my approach to this young band wasn't the best. The idea of listening to yet another band from Manchester left me somewhat skeptical, yet the insistence of my trustworthy shopkeeper, with the promise of exchanging the album for another within a few days, convinced me.
Well, here's how it went; I never returned that CD, which rarely happens to me with a new artist from the UK.
There's no point in recounting the story of these young red-haired and fair-skinned individuals, it's better to listen to the ten tracks of a truly well-made album that finally doesn't contain the usual three chord progressions of the Gallagher brothers, the sad tunes of Chris Martin, or the melancholy of Thom Yorke.
After opening the stage for concerts by bands of the caliber of Sigur Ros, Stereolab, Sonic Youth, and Mogwai with A Word in Your Ear, Alfie proves they have the right ideas. Without the need to fill the songs with radio-friendly choruses, these four twenty-somethings seem to be the calmer cousins of the Gomez; with strictly acoustic guitars that wonderfully intertwine with delicate piano hints and wind sections always in harmony with Lee Gordon's sweet voice, the compositions are an interesting mix of folk, rock, and blues with some hints of psychedelia.

01 A Word in Your Ear (04:17)
It's yours if you want it,
No-one's berating me.
Try not to feel so afraid,
It's your move, angel,
It's all there, in you.
A word in your ear,
There's reason to get through,
Yesterday's never ahead of you.
Carry yourself,
Forclose your enemy,
I'm not worthy of you now and I'll never be.
It's yours if you want it,
No-one's berating me.
Try not to feel so afraid,
It's your move, angel,
It's all there, in you.
A word in your ear,
There's reason to get through,
Yesterday's never ahead of you.
Carry yourself,
Forclose your enemy,
I'm not worthy of you now and I'll never be.
