Debut album for Alestorm, dated 2008. Our heroes, for those who don't know, are a group of patriotic Scottish pirates, with a passion for the sea, battles, and beer (but shouldn't pirates be obsessed with rum? Bah... The mysteries of life...).

Like the vast majority of musical debuts, "Captain Morgan's Revenge" is not particularly brilliant or original, but presents numerous interesting points. The CD in question can be defined as a musical hodgepodge, a mix of different elements, like the croaky singing of frontman and keyboardist Bowes, the power-speed riffs, the folk interludes on keyboards, and the pirate themes, elements that alone seem to have already been used and pillaged multiple times by other bands (among the most significant influences you can notice are those towards bands like Skyclad, Mago de Oz, Turisas, and Running Wild) but fused together make the album quite fun and enjoyable. The more boring songs (especially the middle tracks of the album) are compensated by much better ones, like the opener "Over The Seas" or the very driven title track, with a very catchy and epic chorus, or even the slower, folkier, and swaying (it's known that pirates are always drunk...) "Nancy The Tavern Wench". The ending leaves a pleasant surprise, with the Scottish national anthem, accompanied by keyboards and drums and sung in a crude but fun tavern version. Listening to this track will make you realize that perhaps the Italian football national team is not made up of the world's worst singers when it comes to national anthems, or maybe it will confirm your idea that the worst indeed are, but they have some serious Scottish contenders to challenge them.

In conclusion, Captain Morgan's revenge results in an album that is not innovative or fundamental for the history of music, but listenable and fun, which leaves hope for the future of these still young musicians, who now need to show us a bit more originality.

Grüss Gott to everyone!!!!!!!!!!
