Alessio Calivi (April 9, 1985) is a singer/songwriter and musician originally from Taurianova (RC).
"Forme e stati" (2009) is his first studio work, which in 7 tracks offers an intense and dark sound, supported by never trivial and melancholically engaging lyrics.
Assisted by Enzo De Masi on drums alone, Alessio gives a display of his talent, not only with his versatile and changeable voice but also by playing guitar, bass, and synth.
The result is a complex and heartfelt album, excellently produced and composed.
Let's analyze the individual tracks:
1) The album starts strong with "Forme e stati", a brief drum intro accompanies Alessio's entrance, alternating between anger and sweetness on a text trying to combat loneliness ("I'm trying to find myself/I got lost") while venting his sorrows in alcohol ("by placing my lips on a glass I will not betray it");
2) "Urlo nel bosco" maintains the theme; the central theme is still loneliness, of a suffering man angry with the world ("I'm in shreds/I'm alone/a swollen face/dirty hair") who envies and despises others' "happiness" ("they make love in front of a mirror to see themselves better/while the conscience outside applauds that act part of enjoyment/part of misery") but gives himself hope for the future and repeats "there will be a day for me too".
3) Hope is also supported by "Inganno autentico", the melodically softest track of the batch ("my rough hand will seek an authentic deception to understand what is already the way to feel unique"), the warm and clear voice tells us of a man in search of himself... Chilling.
4) At the halfway point, we find "Ho scoperto una strada deserta", an instrumental piece that reiterates Alessio's compositional abilities and the excellent Enzo De Masi's drumming skills;
5) "THC" is the masterpiece of the album: solitude, uncertainty, and anger in an applause-worthy piece, to use a soccer metaphor... It's worth the price of the CD!
The climax is the final part of the track: a drum and guitar break anticipates a desperate shout ("what I breathe now will not spare me")
6) "Ad una certa distanza" starts in a claustrophobic and damnably resigned way ("today I've been predictable once again, the boredom I feel lately speaks for me"), it seems like listening to Rino Gaetano soaked in Jack Daniel's... but immediately afterwards a splendid Subsonica-style opening tries to bring back the sunshine ("you can experiment with dissatisfaction play to create another dimension"); but two minutes of gloomy instrumental make me understand it's not the case.. and bring me back down to earth...
7) ...just in time to listen to the last part of the journey, because that's what it is..
"Ritorno a forme e stati", introduced by "metropolitan" noises and with a dream-like perfect text, closes this "semi-concept on solitude" worthily.
Conclusion: talent and uncommon artistic sensitivity on a chameleon-like and charismatic voice, I hope it does not go unnoticed...
