I find myself here reviewing this mini-CD, a collaboration between the Japanese hardcore band Ultimo Rausea and the Australian band Chickenshit, released by Ecocentric Records in 1996 in only 1000 copies. Both groups offer a punk-hc strongly influenced by Discharge, GBH, and Crass. In these six tracks, Ultimo Rausea prove their worth with a raw and violent approach, with a strong inclination towards chaos and uncontrolled anger. We're faced with tracks of sixty seconds each, and after a brief disturbing intro of pure noise, the show kicks off with "Confused", which is appreciated for the sandpapered drum sound that resembles the flushing of a toilet, the sharp guitars full of feedback noise, and desperate vocals as in "Conveyor system", "Ketachigai", and "O-F-F". The B-side continues with Chickenshit, a furious outfit from Perth, already known for other splits with Unholy Grave, another grindcore band from the land of the rising sun, and UG Man. They also present a brief intro where it seems like they are fighting among themselves, until noise and madness take over the stereo with "Webbet feet", "Depht charge my mind", "Door to door", and others. A total of fifteen tracks, some more thoughtful and others faster, basically a more canonical hardcore compared to that of Ultimo Rausea but no less devastating for it. In certain tracks like the essential "Hang the scum", their fury at the brink of grindcore is appreciated, before returning to hardcore styles as in "The world bank/Pig in shit", this one completely instrumental, and "Writer's block", until their performance concludes with the gunshot sounds of the final "Fuck knows".
A pretty good split to get to know these bands from the underground hc scene, which I recommend obtaining for anyone who daily consumes such extreme and uncompromising sounds.
