LA RECENSIONE

Two years have passed since the publication of this book, and things are going as the author predicted. A monetary union built without a state and without democracy is destined for its demise, much to the dismay of those who persist in defending a lethal project.

The essay dismantles the clichés with which politics and the media narrate the crisis and merely explains the economy according to scientific literature and its foundations with the analysis of the International Monetary Fund's charts.

You will discover why interest rates were so high in the 80s and 90s, why public debt almost doubled in the 80s, and why we went into crisis in '92.

You will learn that this monetary union project has very distant origins and that since 1981, with the divorce between the Treasury and the Bank of Italy, our ordeal has concretely begun.

The essay finally offers insights on how to move beyond the euro and manage what will inevitably happen because in economics nothing is irreversible.

Let us remember that those who tell us today that leaving the euro would be a disaster were telling us a few years ago that with the euro we would work one day less and earn more.

This cliché is also debunked by Professor Bagnai with facts: there are about 100 examples of monetary unions that have dissolved over the course of history.

The Sunset of the Euro received the Canova Award 2013 as the best economic and financial literature text.
