ALAS is a name used by different musical projects. One is a 1970s Argentine trio (Gustavo Moretto, Alex Zucker, Carlos Riganti) whose 1976 self-titled album mixes symphonic prog and jazz fusion. Another is a later operatic/progressive-metal project associated with vocalist Martina Astner and collaborators (demo 1996, album Absolute Purity released 2001).

The 1976 self-titled album by the Argentine trio features two suites ('Buenos Aires solo es piedra' and 'La muerte conto el dinero') and was later issued on CD by EMI with two bonus tracks (review notes). The metal project released the album 'Absolute Purity' (2001) after a 1996 demo ('Engulfed In Grief') and a 1997 split; reviews describe the metal album as derivative and uneven.

DeBaser hosts a handful of reviews for artists named ALAS. One review praises the 1976 Argentine symphonic-prog/jazz-fusion album; another finds the 2001 operatic/progressive-metal album derivative and uneven. The coverage highlights both the 1976 trio (Moretto, Zucker, Riganti) and the later Martina Astner-led project.

For:Listeners of progressive rock, jazz fusion, and operatic/progressive metal; collectors of rare 1970s Argentine prog records.

Splendid combination, free of frills, of Symphonic Prog and Jazz Fusion, keyboard symphonies halfway between Keith Emerson and Alan Gowen, immersed in a sort of mantra of the New York Fusion scene of the time, the few minutes of vocal parts in Argentine language on the record distinguish the peculiarity of the product and the stylistic meeting point with their country of origin.

The album immediately proves to be, as previously mentioned, very derivative and influenced by various genres, ranging, indeed, from progressive metal veiled in melancholy, reminiscent of some tracks by Pain Of Salvation, to rhythmic and guitar outbursts clearly derived from death.
