The Profile

Alabama Thunderpussy are an American heavy/stoner metal band from Richmond, Virginia, formed in 1996. Early releases appeared on Man’s Ruin Records before moving to Relapse. Vocalists included Johnny Throckmorton and later Kyle Thomas; albums span Rise Again (1998) through Open Fire (2007). The band ceased activity in 2008.

Debut album Rise Again (1998) was released on Man’s Ruin and reissued by Relapse in 2004. Open Fire (2007) features vocalist Kyle Thomas and leans into classic 70s/80s-influenced heavy metal. Reviews praise raw guitars, boozy vocals, and Ryan Lake’s riffs.

Two reviews chart Alabama Thunderpussy’s evolution from the raw Southern/Stoner punch of their 1998 debut Rise Again (Man’s Ruin; reissued by Relapse in 2004) to the classic 70s/80s-leaning heavy metal blast of 2007’s Open Fire with Kyle Thomas. Guitars are praised as dirty and inspired, vocals boozy and forceful, and the grooves relentless. Overall sentiment: celebratory and highly approving.
