The Profile

Aktuala is a Milan-based collective led by Walter Maioli (with Daniele Cavallanti among key members) active from 1973 to 1976 on Bla Bla Records. Their three albums—Aktuala, La terra, and Tappeto volante—pioneered a world‑music approach, blending Mediterranean, North African and Middle Eastern timbres, extensive percussion, and jazz/experimental currents. Contributors included Lino Capra Vaccina and a young Trilok Gurtu.

Name ‘Aktuala’ means ‘current’ in Esperanto. Label: Bla Bla. Albums: Aktuala (1973), La terra (1974), Tappeto volante (1976). Early participation by Trilok Gurtu. Produced by Pino Massara. Some editions include later CD bonus tracks. Activity centered in Milan, with travels/recordings extending abroad.

Reviews celebrate Aktuala’s 1973–1976 run on Bla Bla Records as a pioneering example of world music from Milan. La terra is highlighted for organic, percussion-led flows and early involvement of Trilok Gurtu. The debut blends Mediterranean, North African and Middle Eastern colors; Tappeto volante extends the journey with field recordings and jazz nods. The group’s spirit is described as honest, exploratory, and ahead of its time.
