THE REVIEW

The sonic (and visual) nightmare of the second episode of the captivating Silent Hill series will be the focus of this review.

Like all the other soundtracks of the series (including the movie one), the composer is Akira Yamaoka.

The light is scarce.

The light of salvation seems nonexistent in these notes.

Silence, night, the deepest fog.

The tormented human soul, endless anguish, solitude.

Welcome to Silent Hill.

« This town has something... Wrong... »

The entire soundtrack is suffused with a perpetual darkness.

Entirely (unlike other compositions in the series that follow) instrumental: languid, spectral, melancholic, noise-filled atmospheres. A sense of perpetual emptiness.

The first composition (which then serves as the leitmotif throughout the game) is "Theme of Laura": a beautiful rock composition with excellent guitar weaving; other tracks in the disc with this structure also include "Love Psalm", "Overdose Delusion", "Promise". Some of these are variations of the main theme ("Theme of Laura").

The other tracks are very short but very intense, composed of piano textures (the famous "Laura Plays the Piano"), noises, electronic influences, ambient ("Fermata in a Mistic Air"), cellos that draw pure melancholy ("True").

They will predominantly accompany us through the streets of Silent Hill. And our hearts will never stop beating. The adrenaline will skyrocket.

Surely, to compose them, master Yamaoka was inspired by German electronics, industrial ("Terror in the Depths of the Fog" seems to emerge from the Nine Inch Nails repertoire), the noise of Einstürzende Neubauten and the claustrophobia of Killing Joke.

Let yourself be kidnapped!
