What's happening?
On the cover, a drawing typical of the worst 70s progressive rock, those drawings of lunar or desert landscapes (they wanted to represent a futuristic radio station in the desert... hmm).
The first album by the French duo AIR (JB Dunckel and Nicolas Godin), "Moon Safari" was very pleasant. They had ridden the wave raised by Daft Punk to create the French scene and take advantage of it, nothing wrong with that in itself.
Pleasant for the stupid relaxation of "Sexy Boy" or "La Femme d'Argent" and the retro sounds laid on delicate layers. Without understanding why, I listened to it a lot, because it was unpretentious, a background album.
Immense, on the other hand, was the remix "Alex Gopher-Gordini mix" that appeared on "Premiers Symptomes." Here "Radio One" works well, among vintage keyboards and electronic drums, the 808, to be clear, and an affected singing.
Then there's "Vagabond," the song written together with Beck, introduced by an accordion (for too long) followed by an acoustic guitar with Beck singing lazily as usual (but it remains a typical Beck production)...
Then we find strings and flutes; we're in prog rock (Jethro Tull?). Then again acoustic guitar for 60's, 70's harmonies, yet another guitar and a piano clumsily stuck onto electronic backgrounds.
An ill-fated attempt at eclecticism. As eclecticism hardly ever succeeds.
Good to listen to on the radio. On Radio One. For a couple of minutes.

This CD is proof of it.
'10.000 Hz Legend' is a masterpiece on all fronts, one of the highest peaks reached not only by Air but also by modern electronic music in general.
