At just over ten years old he was building strange gadgets that emitted even stranger sounds, at fifteen his first record, at twenty his albums were making him enough money to buy a tank and place it in his parents' garden. Richard D. James is Aphex Twin or he is AFX or he is Analord, yet he is a musical genre unto himself. This diabolical young man is said to be: "if there were only one sound left in the world, Richard would chase it, sample it, break it down, defragment it until he gives it ten thousand more 'siblings,' ten thousand more sounds, designed and created to keep it from dying of boredom". And his mental sobriety can be inferred from his most famous statements: "I like sitting in the studio with my balls hanging out, I don't want to have to wear trousers while playing" and "I should spend more time having sex; this year there has been no way to dedicate myself to girls."
"Chosen Lords" is a compilation that assembles ten tracks of ours, chosen and selected among the 11 "anti-promotional" vinyls released under the moniker Analord for his personal label, Rephlex. A record full of stupidly interesting things – if played by the diabolic- like old school electro mantras, acid techno sprinkled with vocoder (distorted to the point of parody) and surprising tempos that even brush against four-four time.
Evil things like spasms of analog synthesizers that reduce the eighties to a pure algorithm and 'seasoned' silicon beats immersed in the dark, slimy hardware of a laptop. A perfect fusion between the labyrinthine style that fits noises into small hellish gadgets conceived and created for the sole purpose of emitting unexpressed sound effects and the (!) sonic joke ("Come To Daddy" perhaps wasn't it?) that avoids shocking the eardrums and instead aims to be more digestible to the faint-hearted through the use of more "soft" and accessible sounds.
In two words, commercially unclassifiable.
