The Profile

British collective blending West African and Irish traditions with electronic production, formed in 1995 and long associated with Real World Records. Their debut, Volume 1: Sound Magic (1996), set the template for their Afro–Celtic, trance-infused sound.

Formed in 1995 by guitarist/producer Simon Emmerson; early releases on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records include Volume 1: Sound Magic (1996), Volume 2: Release (1999), and Volume 3: Further in Time (2001). Later albums include The Source (2016).

One DeBaser review frames Afro Celt Sound System’s debut as a seamless Afro–Irish fusion guided by trance-ready rhythms. Bagpipes, jigs, harp, and fiddle meet African percussion, voices, and talking drums. The result shifts from nostalgic to lively, yet remains pop-accessible. The reviewer feels displaced yet more human in this world-trance celebration.
