Damon Albarn, as many of you may know, is none other than the lead singer of Blur.
Recently, Albarn has fallen in love with Africa, even deciding to record his latest Blur album in Morocco. However, before that, he had already recorded an album in Mali with the most important local musicians, including the master Ko Kan Ko Sata Doumbia.
You might immediately think: Oh no, another album by the British about world music, what a drag.
No, nothing could be more wrong, this album is a concentration of local emotions, both melancholic and purely joyful. 16 tracks to listen to all in a row, not once but a thousand times. Damon Albarn plays in every song and even sings in some. The beauty of the album is its uniqueness compared to others on the market. After recording the album in Africa, Albarn took it home, where it was revised and mixed in some parts, achieving excellent assemblage views in the pieces (it is not easy to combine African sounds with electronics without losing the charm of the African song).
The album starts with the track "Spoons," Albarn sings, or more like whispers his la la las, with a beautiful, truly exceptional piano in the background.
The rest of the album is practically sung by local singers with some falsetto by Damon in the background. All the songs are wonderful, the final part offers the most melancholic portion of the album, truly, truly stirring; worth noting is the beautiful "Sunset Coming On" sung by Damon.
An album that, in my opinion, should not be missing from the collection of any good music collector. Moreover, by spending the money on the album this time, we have a great album in hand, with a booklet very rich in images and lyrics. The album was released by Jones Honest Records, Damon Albarn's newly founded record label. 5/5 More Than Deserved.
