The Profile

Achim Reichel is a German singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer from Hamburg. A co-founder of The Rattles in the 1960s, he later explored krautrock with A.R. & Machines before carving a distinctive solo path from the mid-1970s with maritime folk and shanties. His 1991 single Aloha Heja He became a major hit.

Born 28 January 1944 in Hamburg, Germany. Co-founded The Rattles; led the krautrock project A.R. & Machines in the early 1970s; solo focus on maritime folk since 1975; notable hit: Aloha Heja He (1991).

Reviews portray Achim Reichel as a Hamburg-born outsider who evolved from 60s beat and 70s kraut/avant-garde to a singular folk/shanty voice. Dat Shanty Alb'm (1976) launches his maritime style; Klabautermann (1977) toughens it with classic rock; Regenballade (1978) adapts German poetry (including Goethe) with peak intensity in Die Zauberlehrling; Raureif (2015) delivers a late-career masterclass of adventurous, detail-rich songs.
