German singer-songwriter from Hamburg, active since the 1960s; noted for a transition from 60s beat and early 70s kraut-electro to an eclectic folk/sea-shanty persona from the mid-1970s onward.

Born 1944 in Hamburg; long career since the 1960s; had the widely known song "Aloha Heja He" (1991).

DeBaser reviews (by Danny The Kid) celebrate Achim Reichel's distinctive maritime/folk period and earlier experiments in kraut-electro and beat. Raureif and Regenballade are highlighted as high points for atmosphere, songwriting and interpretive charisma. Dat Shanty Alb'm and Klabautermann are noted as foundational and consolidating works in his sea-themed phase.

For:Listeners who enjoy maritime folk, German singer-songwriters, krautrock and eclectic folk-rock with storytelling lyrics.

Achim Reichel is an unusual character, surrounded by an aura of charm, almost of mystery, an outsider, a lone traveler who has charted his own course through the decades; oh, and also an excellent songwriter and charismatic performer, but that goes without saying, otherwise I wouldn't be here talking about him.

If I had to choose just one song as the absolute pinnacle of AR's repertoire, the choice would certainly fall on "Die Zauberlehrling", and given the level of the "competition" this speaks volumes about the piece's excellent quality.
