The Profile

Absu was an American black metal band from Texas, led by drummer/vocalist Proscriptor McGovern. Known for a black/thrash blend and mythological themes, they released key albums from Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L. (1993) to Abzu (2011) and disbanded in 2020.

Formed in Texas and led by Proscriptor McGovern, Absu coined the term “Mythological Occult Metal.” Their music fuses black and thrash metal with lyrics drawing on Sumerian and Celtic mythologies. Notable releases include Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L., The Sun of Tiphareth, The Third Storm of Cythraul, Tara, Absu, and Abzu.

A positive, analytical take on Absu (2009): the band returns after Tara with their signature black/thrash assault, anchored by Proscriptor’s commanding drumming and vocals. Themes dwell on ancient lore, especially Sumerian mythology, while touches like synths and piano add color. Standouts include the sprawling “...Of The Dead Who Never Rest In Their Tombs Are The Attendance Of Familiar Spirits.”
