The Profile

The Abdullah Ibrahim Trio is the long-running ensemble format led by South African pianist-composer Abdullah Ibrahim (born 1934, Cape Town), renowned for meditative, suite-like performances blending African melodies, American jazz, and Islamic influences.

Abdullah Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand after his 1968 conversion to Islam) is a leading figure of South African jazz and an alumnus of the Jazz Epistles. Discovered in Europe by Duke Ellington, he received a Reprise contract and even filled in for Ellington at the piano with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. After exile during apartheid, he freely returned to perform in South Africa. The trio’s documented lineups include Belden Bullock (bass) and George Gray (drums) in 2005, and Marcus McLaurine (bass) with George Johnson (drums) on the 1995 live recording Yarona at Sweet Basil.

Two glowing reviews chart the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio’s spellbinding live presence and the lyrical sweep of Yarona. The write-ups highlight Ibrahim’s South African roots, Duke Ellington’s pivotal support, and a style fusing African melodies with jazz pianism. Specific lineups include Belden Bullock and George Gray (2005) and Marcus McLaurine with George Johnson (1995).
