Rating: Let's first evaluate the pros and cons of this band. In previous reviews, I expressed my strong doubts about the consistency of Ska-P (later agreeing with the majority that they are "gross commercial sellouts"), then regarding Mr. Manu Chao... and what about 99 Posse? In their favor are the numerous court cases (illegal concerts, incitement to crime, possession of drugs...) and for this, we must acknowledge that they actually practice what they preach.
However, dark thoughts start to burden us when we see their 3D video "Stop that Train" on Mtv, when we read "BMG spa" on the back of the CD, when the label never says less than 14.00 euros, when we never hear "99 Posse involved in a concert for the children of Niger!"... and here comes a little voice in our heads saying: "Are you taking the piss?".
On the other hand, it sounds strange that three starving guys would come together to make rap in Neapolitan and gain fame with an album like Curre Curre Guagliò, which, allow me to say, may be their iconic CD, but is truly poor in every respect. Then, starting to make money hand over fist, it's clear the standard has gone up, culminating in this good NA 99 10° (believe me, the other works are really not worth much, except perhaps for La Vida Que Vendrà). This is also the Greatest Hits of the southern band: all the greatest hits of 99 Posse are collected in live or remixed versions, and therefore superior to the previous ones.
Some tracks have been adapted to the needs of the moment, like "Odio," whose lyrics recount the events of the G8 in Genoa. Much angrier are the remakes of Curre Curre Guagliò (live), All'Antimafia (rmx), Odio/Rappresaglia (live), Ripetutamente/O'Documento/Napoli (live) and the historic Rigurgito Anti-Fascista (live with reprise). But in essence, they are still the same 99 Posse with the sensual Meg, the perfect rap of O'Zulù and the jokes of Papa J, here joined on the keyboards by the Japanese noise artist Sakamoto. Lots of musicality and excellent basic sound effects; it adds the energy that was missing in previous works. Consistency or not, 99 Posse are one of the biggest pieces (almost certainly the biggest) of Italian Hip Hop, and thus also of the history of our music. Worth listening to at least once.
