The 12 Stones are back, even if they wouldn't want to be. After the fallout with Wind-Up, the rock band from Louisiana has chosen to shelve plans for a new album, instead releasing the EP "The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday" rather than an official record.
For now, the follow-up to the successful "Anthem For The Underdog" from 2007 is on hold. The band of Paul McCoy returns after 3 years with an EP that marks a marginal return to their early style.
From the very first track, and indeed the best of the work, "Welcome To The End," songwriter McCoy returns after years to using (albeit somewhat timid) scream parentheses, while the guitar duo Weaver/Rimer reintroduces a less syrupy and more 'hard' sound without disregarding the strong melodic component that's always been a defining element of the band.
The second track " We Are One " is excellent, with a looping chorus reminiscent of the style of Three Days Grace from a few years ago (trends, as we know, are what they are now), a track also used for marketing in the world of American Wrestling, which has become a worn-out fad, yet the track remains convincing and lively.
The rhythms slow down veering towards pop/rock in "Disappear" and "Tomorrow Comes Today", honestly between the EP title and this track, I think the group might have some issues with time cognition. Otherwise, not much to say, an impactful "The Reason"/Hoobastank-like piece that could have honestly been spared.
The rock of "Enemy" decently closes the record, Paul McCoy proves to have now assimilated a more or less personal style in composing vocal bases, with rhythmic cadences well accompanied by the guitar of E. Weaver and the rest of the band.
What can be said, certainly the group is far from the quality of the lively self-titled "12 Stones" from 2002 and probably will never again present a style so close to 'clean' Nu Metal/Hard Rock as back then, but for now this EP can be considered sufficient, awaiting a contract with a new major label, and inevitably, the reuse of tracks from this work. Nowadays, nothing is thrown away; everything is sadly 'recycled'.
