Anyway, a note on the songwriting: the lyrics of Altars may not be anything special, but we must say that Morbid Angel introduced new themes in death metal: no more blood, guts everywhere, mutilation, and torture, but a little deeper lyrics, like those, indeed, anti-Christian ones. Along with TOMB OF THE MUTILATED by the legendary CANNIBAL CORPSE, this ALTARS OF MADNESS is a masterpiece of brutal death metal that should be in the discography of every self-respecting deathster! Hail to MORBID ANGEL!!!
no no and then no: we don’t agree. 1 growling was already invented earlier by Napalm Death and Possessed (do you remember "Seven Churches"???) 2 Without taking anything away from this drummer, but it seems to me that he doesn’t hold up to the comparison with Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy or Chris Reinert of Cynic and Death, the drummer of Suffocation, and many others. 3 It doesn’t seem to me that an album from '89 could influence Death, who debuted in '87 and released Leprosy in '88: quite the opposite!!!!
Uhhhmmmmm, Vincent's singing in this album isn't particularly innovative; he really starts using the true growl with Blessed are the Sick, and in this album, he draws inspiration from Cronos and Becerra...
An album that is nothing short of seminal in the extreme scene. Stunning in its wicked progression, the riffing from the two guitarists is frenetic, and Vincent's vocals are legendary. A collection of unforgettable tracks starting from the opener. Despite the thrash influence still being very much present, I believe it to be one of the best death metal albums in history. Definitely the best from the Morbid Angel (though Covenant ranks just behind it). I take this opportunity to compliment the reviewer; all your works are well-crafted and entertaining, well done!
