Excellent band, along with Landberk (and their related side project, Morte Macabre), the pioneers of Swedish neo-prog in the nineties. Personally, I prefer their first three works (Vemod, Nucleus, and From Within), and the Japanese live recordings - a true blessing and curse for the band - are quite charming. If you're interested in the genre and enjoy the Scandinavian scene, specifically Swedish, give Algarnas Tradgard a try, 70s psychedelic prog (very old style).
@Ktulu: thanks for the suggestions, I don't know them but I'll make up for it right away! As for Anekdoten, I actually prefer the last two: "Gravity" and "A Time Of Day," did you get that? ;-) @CJBS: give them a listen, it's really worth it!
biddi biddi. On their maispeis you can click on a rba that I don't understand what it is, which should be a way to get them to come play around Turin, and the more people click, the better. I don't know if I make myself clear.
Hi OleEinar, I really like the last two, but I assure you they are all of the highest level. If you go to their myspace (http://www.myspace.com/anekdoten) you can listen to some tracks from each album! Enjoy!
But if you said it loosely follows "RED," how can it be dreamy and warm? "RED" is cold and ruthless, geometric and wicked to the brink of madness, the first math rock album in history for a reason. You talk about "soft" percussion... well, Bruford on that album sounds like an octopus smashing the skins, pounding us like crazy... Don’t compare it to "Red" if you don’t know what you’re talking about.
A more than valid objection. Well, maybe the comparison with "Red" was a bit audacious; I mentioned it mainly to give a general idea to those who have never listened to this album. If you talk to me about the use of single instruments, I completely agree with you; they are not comparable. But in an overall view, indeed, this album reminds me much of the atmospheres of "Fallen Angel" rather than "Starless," which don't seem so cold to me; on the contrary, they convey warmth and melancholy. I didn't mean to say that this album is like "Red," but that it could be its offspring, with similarities and differences. Of course, these are just my opinions! Anyway, mentioning King Crimson is never a good business! Regards.
A truly successful album from a very talented group. However, it's not a 5-star release: we are not facing their best work, so if we give 5 stars to this, what should we give to the first two? And, broadening the discussion, if we give 5 to this, how many should we give to King Crimson's Red, to which they owe so much?
Overkill, you’re exaggerating. Anekdoten owe a lot to King Crimson, and defining Red as cold and relentless, geometric and evil is quite a stretch. Given the lyrics and atmospheres, I would say we’re almost at the opposite. It’s true that that might be your impression, but I would argue that it was absolutely not what Fripp and the gang wanted to convey at the time. Let alone thinking they were anticipating Math Rock; let’s not joke about that, please. I completely disagree.
Good point thejargonking, I agree with you regarding King Crimson, but according to this reasoning the scale should consist of at least 25 stars, don't you think? 5 stars as the lowest point is too limiting!
beautiful (the umpteenth) album by a great band. every time I listen to it, it feels like I'm hearing King Crimson again, just as the reviewer mentions. for me too, 5 seems excessive, but I would never feel right giving it less than 4 stars...
I personally consider it the best; the first Vemod might be more beautiful, but there is too much King Crimson as an influence. As for the new album, given that these are not professional musicians, after all, each member has another job—who can ever know?
