Singing in Scream is never the same as singing in Growl. The former is a typically "Black Metal" attitude and akin styles, although many bands of different genres have adopted it (such as: Ensiferum, Carcass in their latest iteration, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, etc.), while "Growl" is characterized by a guttural sound, in low and deep tones, much like the growl of a bear (from which the word derives), and is typical of numerous Death/Thrash bands. Examples? Opeth, Bloodbath, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, etc. As for Borknagar, the vocals have always been influenced by "Scream," derived from Black Metal, even in the less "orthodox" episodes, which is the root of the band's sound. Specifically, ICS Vortex, in this work, uses very little Scream, focusing more on remarkable high notes and epic melodiousness.
I also adore Borknagar; here is my ranking. The "phases": 1) Garm Phase 2) Vintersorg Phase 3) Vortex Phase And now the albums: 1) Borknagar 5 stars 2) Empiricism 5 stars 3) The Olden Domain 4.5 stars 4) The Archaic Course 4 stars 5) Epic 4 stars 6) Quintessence 3.5 stars I haven't listened to Origin yet... feel free to crucify me...
Ozzy, sorry for the delay, thanks for the explanations... for now I prefer the scream over the growl... but above all I prefer the clean... but these Borknagar are really strong... the review is written very well...
I'm diving into them right now... What can I say... as usual, your reviews are spot on! Ah, Garm is a genius; I'm also getting into Perdition City... what an album!!!
