The deadly silence of Lee Dorrian's discography lasted two years after the conclusion of the immense career of Cathedral. If Doom Metal still exists and endures, much of the credit goes to the former voice of the early works of Napalm Death.
Lee was never afraid to dare, to take risks; at the start of his career, he gave birth to one of the most violent monsters of the nascent Grindcore (Napalm, indeed), then changing direction immediately after, tackling the slower, darker, and sabbathic side of his musical creed. In this way, he built the monumental and icy sound of Cathedral. But let's get back to With the Dead and their debut released in October 2015.
He is supported by two ex-prisoners who played with Electric Wizard: Mark Greening and Tim Bagshaw.
The album was recorded in just a few sessions; produced and distributed by "Rise Above Records," Lee's own label.
The analysis of the album must start once again with the cover image: the three musicians seem to emerge from a putrid catacomb. Gaunt faces, vacant, with no expression whatsoever.
Then comes the Music, which takes us back in time, recalling that masterpiece of suffocating slowness that was "Forest of Equilibrium" by Cathedral.
Only six tracks with an average length close to seven minutes. Slow, pressing, extremely heavy as they weave their insidious plots; a "closed," dense, dirty sound. With Lee's voice intent on weaving vocal sermons of horrifying beauty.
"Living With The Dead" and "I Am Your Virus," the best tracks of this dark work: a strenuous sonic experience, overflowing with sinister and leaden Sabbathian riffs.
Lee has returned to live with the dead... Screams From My Own Grave...
Ad Maiora.
