LA RECENSIONE

Who remembers Üstmamò?
"If the '90s were such a long time ago," paraphrasing one of their old songs.
It seems that Redeghieri and company have disappeared, and after the commercial flops of their last two albums, they decided to go their separate ways. A real pity because Üstmamò were among the protagonists of the (unrepeatable?) golden era of Italian rock.

The album in question is the second one, the one with the cap on the cover which then looked very grunge and is a significant turning point for the band's evolution, as they almost completely abandon the red thread that linked them to CCCP to approach the electronic turn that would soon follow.
It must be said that even on this record, Ferretti's shadow, also the co-author of "malinconici," appears at times overwhelming, but the album is a true kaleidoscope of musical sounds and colors that leaves you speechless. A real delight: from the pro-cannabis reggae of "rollamaffi" through the pop of "semplicemente," the grunge of the superb "tannomai," the punk of "annegherò nel dolo," the electronics of "intentemp," the schizoid "cuore di segatura" that starts as a ballad and changes register one, two times.

An explosion of creativity that, although somewhat derivative at times, overwhelms and entertains the listener. Never again, in my personal opinion, will the ustamo reach the heights included here, and their pop-electronic turn never quite convinced me.
Crossover, in the noblest and most literal sense of the term. Perhaps this is how one can attempt to describe the incredible melting pot that emerges. A classic still very current and perfect as a soundtrack for a hot and crazy summer.

Üstmamò

Üstmamò are an Italian group from the Reggio Apennines. Debuting in 1991, they evolved from CCCP-influenced post‑punk to trip hop and electronic rock, with Mara Redeghieri’s distinctive voice at the forefront. They worked early on with Giovanni Lindo Ferretti and later with producer Roberto Vernetti, disbanding around 2002–2003.
