The Death Of Anna Karina. That is, one of the best bands in the Italian scene. One of the groups, along with Settlefish, Laghetto, La Quiete, and a few others, that breathes new life and vitality into the vibrant yet somewhat flat sonic underground of our country.
But what do these guys play?
The genre should (might) be defined as "emo-violence"... psychopathic vocals on schizophrenic scores. Let's take the first track "The Infection": a circus keyboard that might remind you of a Blood Brothers song, the title of which I don't recall, is suddenly assaulted and overpowered by guitars that pick up its simple yet effective motif. The Blood Brothers could very well be the overseas cousins of "the death of Anna Karina."
On several occasions, the crazy quintet from Seattle comes to mind, but our Italian counterpart has a more violent approach, starting with a voice that doesn’t get lost in disorienting little voices but instead "limits itself" to spitting out intelligent lyrics... screams, whispers in the grip of the most intimate anguish, grants us a few seconds of melody, only to plunge us back into brutal reality... the rest of the band oscillates between cerebral post-core rhythms, almost crust accelerations, punk'n'roll-like attitude, and excursions into jazz and psychedelia.
Excellent album, certainly not easy or commerci(al), but one that gives hope for the future of this group. After the success of Settlefish, the Death Of Anna Karina also deserve international recognition.
The gloomy and sulfurous atmosphere is brilliantly maintained with effective instrumental breaks.
The choice of vocals left me quite puzzled... Overall, to me, it seems decidedly inadequate and out of place with the musical structure.
