Great album... an album that doesn't make an impact on the first listen and, except for a couple of moments, is totally different from the Deftones. The fear of listening to a pop version of the Sacramento group is allayed... fortunately. The album, as everyone expected given the group's lineup, is rich in electronics, noise harmonies, and on the first listen, it proves to be very hypnotic.
Chino Moreno, in great shape, leads the group with his almost always delicate voice, in a whirlwind of emotions and tensions that by the second listen could cause a certain addiction.
The songs are rather short, almost all under 4 minutes, and don't get lost in a lot of sound embellishments. The guys understood, with a gestation spanning 5 years, what they wanted to propose to the public. I am honestly very curious to see what their sound is like live.
A little advice: those who love the Deftones raw and unadulterated and dislike variations on the theme should stay away from this album, as it would be very, too difficult, and could be judged boring; however, those who also love pop, in this case sweet and electronic with many creative cues and characterized by a superb voice, can approach this album with the right caution and honest criticism... I am sure it will not leave anyone indifferent.
