"Let us surprise you": this is the "preparatory appeal" from Mr. Daisuke Fuwa (conductor of the Shibusa Shirazu Orchestra), at the Jazz evening in S. Anna Arresi. A multifaceted and spectacular ensemble, both musically and visually, put together by the (visionary) Mr. Fuwa: a group of about forty variable elements (depending on the context and geographical location of the concert) including wind players of all kinds, percussionists, electrified and non-electrified guitarists, keyboardists, extras, dancers, Butoh performers, painters, rear visuals staff, vocalists, and more.

What can be unanimously considered the main event - the only date within the national borders - of the 2005 summer festival, set up in the shadow of the Nuraghe of Sant'Anna Arresi, starts (so to speak) from the rear: the entrance of the large "playing-agitating troop," with a notable sense of disorientation not just acoustic for the large audience, takes place on the diametrically opposite side to the (microbial, at least for them..) stage which they will occupy and from which they will subsequently overwhelm, literally, the incredulous and increasingly bewildered onlookers. An incendiary mix of free-jazz, klezmer, Japan-folk, rock, country, Balkan music, funky (a visceral love for the early James Brown is perceptible "to the naked ear") etc. etc. Two and a half hours - brief, like never before - of absolute and multifaceted musical/visual catharsis: a continuum, an ascent (or descent.. ask those who prematurely left their position..) towards unexplored shores of improvisation and pseudo-anarchy (controlled..) sound.

Mr. Daisuke, like every good "orchestra conductor" who prides themselves on such a title, directs (in his own way..) the multifaceted, rattling group, practically in a trance (who knows what on earth was inside the ubiquitous, ever-present cigarettes..): in the midst of the chaos, he precisely dictates the times, assigns tasks, determines the breaks.. often sitting, if not lying, on the dirty boards of the stage. The Shibusa recorded works, recent and not, (it is worth remembering the latest work Shibuboshi - 2004, the eighth work for Mr. Fuwa's record label, Chitei Rec.) are looted, blended, distorted, and exalted repeatedly in the live dimension. Finally, it is necessary to remember that the performance in Sant'Anna Arresi recalls the anniversary (to ensure it never happens again) of the devastations caused by the "goodwill bombings" on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Great concert, spectacular ensemble... The problem that arises now is this: these evenings "force" one to be (even more) demanding; in simple terms: who can manage to go listen to/watch any other group... with all this "godsend" (from the land of the rising sun) imprinted in their ears?
