Here is another example of the cinematic (and moral, I dare say) decline of Hollywood horror films. "La setta delle tenebre" is in fact yet another pointless attempt to offer a beaten-to-death storyline hoping for the addiction of the younger audience. Yet another vampire story (or presumed ones) who "aristocratically" go around slaughtering with a gadget that looks very much like a Breil pendant.
The director of such rubbish is Sebastian Gutierrez, already the screenwriter of Gothika and another crap like Snakes on a Plane. Not content with having already brought a lot of garbage into the world, Gutierrez has decided to continue on his path, bringing to the screen another colossal failure. Struggling in the midst of this cinematic dung is the beautiful Lucy Liu, also out of tune and upside down, forced to avenge her murder (don't worry she inexplicably remains alive) and that of officer Rawlins' daughter (Michael Chiklis).
You'll understand that when ideas are lacking, only two solutions present themselves to the director: the first is to emphasize the scenes of throat slashing and killings, while the second is to constantly bring the camera a few centimeters from Liu's "Asian" curves. The third solution, most often suggested by critics, is the cordial invitation to Gutierrez to change profession.
The parade of absurdities that the film offers is nothing short of abominable, as well as the poverty of dialogues that seem to have been written by the worst of illiterates (the screenwriter is named Sebastian Gutierrez...)
The good work of cinematographer John Toll (already an Oscar winner for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart) fails to uplift the fate of a film that started poorly and ended worse, which, together with titles like The Unborn, Whisper, and House of the Dead (just to name a few), represents the negative pinnacle of the overseas horror genre.
