Roy Montgomery is a New Zealand guitarist who was particularly active in the 1990s and is known for being part of musical projects like Dissolve, Dadamah, and Hash Jar Tempo (the latter being a result of collaboration with the Californian psychedelic band Bardo Pond).

His distinctive style is characterized by strong sound experimentation and harmonies, lyrics, and arrangements that verge on minimalism. The result is a very personal sound that has helped place him among the greatest musical geniuses of a couple of decades ago.

The album under review is the result of his solo project and is perhaps his most successful work, along with Well Oiled by Hash Jar Tempo.

And Now the Rain Sounds Like Life Is Falling Down Through It, this is the title, perfectly fitting.

The Rain, la pioggia. This element reigns supreme in this work. The atmospheres created by the good Roy perfectly recall those of rainy days. Cold, gray, and somewhat melancholic atmospheres.

Standing by the window gazing at the rain with this album as a soundtrack: a perfect symbiosis.

Take, for example, the title track, one of the several short pieces present in this work. The effects, the noises seem to simulate those of a heavy downpour.

The album is mostly composed of instrumental pieces where the guitar dominates, sometimes accompanied by a piano. Otherwise, effects and overdubs.

It’s pointless to describe each piece in the work. Everyone could indeed have a different feeling from listening to such a complex album. So, just listen. It will take you at most 50 minutes and could open up a world for you.

A masterpiece of psychedelia

My personal rating: 9/10
