Ron is an artist who appears at just the right moment. He releases an album of original songs every 6-7 years, but undoubtedly he still has something to say.
8 years after Un abbraccio unico, interspersed with an anthology benefit project and a tribute to Lucio Dalla, comes Sono un figlio, 13 songs for 47 minutes, all acoustically arranged, with a reimagined cover, and with both renowned and new authors from the Italian songwriting scene.
"Sono un figlio," which gives the album its title and opens it, talks about the parents' love story during World War II, and you can hear the fingers changing chords on the guitar strings. Very touching.
"Più di quanto ti ho amato" and "Abitante di un corpo celeste" are, along with track one, the three singles that preceded the album's release, which occurred on September 30, 2022. The first one, as suggested by its title, is a love song, and the second one is about life, with the celestial body being indeed the Earth.
"Diventerò me stesso" is introspective, and the protagonist finds himself alone in the streets but doesn't feel the lack of anything.
"Un'astronave nel cielo" has an opening that recalls "Almeno pensami," and it speaks about the fears of love.
A good track, but it is with "Melodramma pop" that the peak of the work is reached; the track is lively and references Freud, Joyce, and Totò.
With "La stessa persona," meaning the person loved from and for a lifetime, the level also remains high.
"Annina," on the other hand, is unique; it is dedicated to a woman who doesn't like herself even when everything is going well. Curiously, it references "quel fuoco," which is one of the subsequent tracks, and it's not the only crossover, demonstrating that Ron intended a concept album about his life and his 52 years of activity.
"Questo vento" and "Quel fuoco" are linked both in the track list and semantically. The first revisits the relationship with a father, like the first song, but this time it is a pretext to talk about generational diversity. The second is the album's cover, of "Break my heart again" by Finneas, which Ron reimagined with his sister Enrica in the lyrics, and the singer-songwriter also completely remodeled the arrangement.
"Nelle lettere," written by Nicolò Agliardi, is an ode to a way of communicating now obsolete, but that Ron experienced deeply: "I hold you in the letters, so I feel alive."
"Fino a domani" is the story of a couple that, in order to move forward, needs to get out of the routine and shake up the plans, "until tomorrow," indeed.
This good album closes with "I gatti," which also preceded the album. It is one of the best on the track list, and it is no coincidence that it was placed at the end. The felines in the title are a pretext to remember those who are no longer there. The cats "don’t apologize, but they know how to keep secrets." Great song.
Sono un figlio is an album that for the lyrics and Rosalino's voice would even be worth 4 stars, but the music and arrangements, while well-crafted, are too uniform, taking away half a point from the work.
