There are niche artists, obscure names little known to the general public who, although overlooked by critics, manage to be influential nonetheless for the bravery and innovation of their work. This is the case of Raul Moretti, a musician who has dedicated himself to the harp, managing to draw unprecedented and new nuances and sounds from this noble instrument. His second album "Harpness" - released in 2016 - is illustrative of his particular art: the album consists of 17 improvisations for electric harp and electronic sounds. The effect on the listener is hypnotic: we are faced with an experimental album akin to certain avant-garde music experiences. It somewhat reminded me of the strange experiments released in the '70s by the legendary Cramps label of Gianni Sassi, the label, to be clear, that, besides the Area, also had in its catalog non-musicians like Walter Marchetti and Juan Hidalgo. However, it is difficult to make comparisons: Raul Moretti is a unique and particular artist who continues, despite the lack of interest, to tour globally in Europe, the Americas, the East, and Australia, presenting his music. The listening experience is of an unreal elegance and will take you to a strange space-time dimension. The long drones might remind, at times, of German cosmic music - particularly Klaus Schulze - or, reaching more current experiences, certain experimental works of the last Coil. The atmospheres at times are almost sacred while at others they become darker and more experimental. It is nonetheless music of great depth that, if listened to with the right mindset, manages to move you. "Harpness" has just been reissued, and it's possible to listen to some excerpts directly on Raul Moretti's site at the following link: http://www.raoulmoretti.it/harpness/.
