Hildegard von Bingen

Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179) was a German Benedictine abbess, composer, writer, and mystic. She authored visionary works and composed a large body of sacred monophonic chants, including the morality play Ordo Virtutum and the collection Symphoniae. Recognized as a Doctor of the Church in 2012, she is among the earliest known named composers in Western music.
