Metallica
Better known as “The black album,” referring to its almost entirely dark cover, “Metallica” is considered by everyone as the band’s “commercialization” album. Released in 1991 as the successor to “…And justice for all,” the album garners a lot of criticism and disapproval from the true metalheads, yet it manages to achieve the expected success, selling a staggering 7 million copies.
“The album of discord” is defined as the fifth work of the San Francisco band.
Having abandoned the thrash sounds, many deemed it inadequate and outdated to identify Metallica as a metal band.
Indeed, the quartet, with the help of Bob Rock (bastard!), made their sound more melodic, so it would more easily and directly reach the ears of novice listeners. The essence of the album is precisely this: beautiful pieces, executed impeccably, but with an unusually low speed. It's also said that the tracks in the album were “modified” by the record label to make the product more marketable. In a few words, you can’t mosh to it anymore!
The songs of “Metallica” have entered the history of music and not only the metal world. Thanks mainly to the five video clips taken from as many songs on the album and the more commercial radio stations, the album became tremendously famous and remained at the top of numerous charts for a long time. “Enter Sandman,” a repetitive but resolute opening track, even won a Grammy Award. The splendid ballads, “Nothing Else Matters” and “The Unforgiven,” managed to find their way into everyone’s hearts, thanks to their amazing melody and catchiness. In addition to the pounding “Sad but True,” the lively “Holier than You,” and the dark “Wherever I May Roam,” the other tracks follow a fairly easy and rhythmic line, with some little bursts here and there.
Surely the black album may not be as powerful, fast, and pounding as the previous masterpieces, but personally, I believe it is undoubtedly a good album endowed with a decent melody and a very high level of listenability for any individual.
