"Light Years" can be described as the album of Kylie Minogue's "first" rebirth (the second would come in 2007 thanks to her battle against breast cancer and return to music). Released in 2000, it is the first project produced by Parlophone/EMI Music, following Kylie’s indie phase with Deconstruction Records.
Preceded by a collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys on the track "In Denial" included in the British colleagues' album, Kylie is ready to reclaim her throne, a throne even Madonna doesn't quite manage to hold: the scepter of the queen of camp music, that is, pop in the style of Donna Summer and Village People, songs that become gay anthems (anthems for the LGBTQ+ world), masterpieces that make you dance and over time become wonderful memories.
"Spinning Around" is the first single; Kylie has changed not only in music, which is increasingly electro-pop, but also in image, becoming a sex bomb thanks to the hot pants she wears in the video. "On a Night Like This" is the second track of this revival album and the second single: a song that could fit her little sister Dannii as it delves into pop-dance moving towards techno. Continuing with "So Now Goodbye", "Disco Down", "Love Boat", "Kookachoo", these are light, very danceable pop songs that simply tell you: dance! They serve as a prelude to another single that has become a classic of Kylie’s, "Your Disco Needs You", which, along with the Pet Shop Boys, called once again to work with her, becomes a sort of "Y.M.C.A." of the new millennium.
"Please Stay" is another beautiful single but more pop, featuring a lot of guitars and less electro, while "Bittersweet Goodbye" is the ballad of this album. "Butterfly" is once again the venture into 90s-style techno music but with many house music atmospheres that lead us to the beautiful cover "Under the Influence of Love" from the 80s. "I Am So High" is a bit more rock-inspired and leads us to the mega-collaboration with Robbie Williams in the beautiful and well-known "Kids".
To close the project, there's "Light Years", a song that includes a sample of "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer, the former queen of pop.
The true princess of pop, Kylie, is excellently preparing to become queen the following year with "Fever" and dethrone Madonna.
"Light Years" is even more beautiful than "Fever" because it spans many sectors of pop music (pop, 80s, electro, techno, house, etc.), and also sees Kylie more mature in the lyrics and productions…
With this album, Kylie Minogue went on tour in Australia and beyond in 2001 with her "On a Night Like This Tour," one of the first colossal shows that the artist is capable of creating.
