They are English, this is their first album, and I've heard and read about a thousand comparisons about them, with artists sometimes not even musically related to each other.
All of which smelled like a rehash, or the next big thing of the English market.
But Klint don't exactly belong to the British mainstream; they are not well-known even in their homeland. So, once again convinced by the interesting cover, I carried out yet another blind-box operation and had it sent to me.
Fortunately, my skepticism dissipated right from track #1, "Closer," because anything that reminds me of the Stone Roses or the Beta Band plays fantastically on my stereo. That smooth rhythm, a descendent of folks like Gomez and Beck, which makes me clap my hands on the steering wheel while driving, immediately struck me. Yet, the greater influence is definitely that of the aforementioned Beta Band: just listen to the vocal melodies to notice, they're all too similar... yet, maybe because they lean more towards a pop style than their mentors, the result achieved by Klint is better.
The mixture of genres and sounds they propose might suggest a big mess, but it’s just their way of fooling around.
The news isn't the mix of genres itself; it's the fact that it all works great.
These guys (some say that Klint is actually just one person, a certain Seba...) want to have fun, and to entertain us, and they manage their own notes very well, with a critical amount of carefreeness that distinguishes those musicians who really do not feel like taking themselves too seriously.
A sense of humor then, but also a meticulous assembly work, otherwise the sound clarity wouldn't make sense.
Occasional punk episodes ("Partykiller"). There are also reflective moments, with some instrumentals like "Are you there," calm then storm then calm, or the peaceful "Beachbun."
And ballads of great emotional impact, like "Olga": soft guitar and vocals, nothing else is needed.
Everyone will be able to find something memorable in this record. A record that serves its purpose well as a car background, or as a chamber divertissement (at certain moments, you might find yourself moving your body standing, on the bed). But you can do whatever the hell you want with it, including buying it on my advice, and using it as a frisbee right after the second listen... until next time.
