The album I am about to review is the new work by the Canadians Kataklysm, who offer us powerful and violent Death Metal with truly devastating apocalyptic nuances. The album opens with the song "Like Angels Weeping (The Dark)" where melody and distortion come together, only to burst into extremely powerful guitar riffs. In the second track, "Let Them Burn", the singer's deep and devastating voice alternates with a second, more shrill and screamed voice, perhaps that of the guitarist or bassist. The third track is titled "Crippled and Broken" and starts with a slow and heavy riff that crushes your eardrums, then it becomes very fast and the singer begins with an even lower and darker growl than in the other songs; the drummer's work, who beats very fast rhythms, is truly commendable. The fourth song, "To Reign Again", begins with a melancholy clean guitar arpeggio, then low and dark riffs kick in, the bass line within the track is beautiful. In the fifth song, "It Turns to Rust", two voices alternate again, the guitarist plays fast, slow, and some melodic riffs creating beautiful contrasts. In the sixth track titled "Open Scars", there's a beautiful solo, too bad it's somewhat overpowered by the rhythm guitars. The seventh track, "Temptations Nest", is a true riff orgy, with numerous tempo changes. The penultimate track, "In Words of Desperation", starts with the usual clean/distorted sound before shifting to low and muted guitars. The last song, "The Road to Devastation", is the longest and slowest on the album, featuring a beautiful solo, first melodic then fast, with violins and disordered voices and a clock heard at the end, then only the clock and then it ends.
This album is truly beautiful, perhaps their best, it would be perfect if there were more solos.
