LA RECENSIONE

Forward. You wake up in the darkness, the television in the room is on. It's not as you imagine, you're not the one entering it. It's it inside you. It's an almost sweet sensation, it only hurts a little when it crosses the brain. Then there's the descent. Because like in every dream, it's impossible not to jolt, falling.

Guilty. This is how the guitars appear, the only real sound in this synthetic illusion. You must cling to them to find your bearings. In the tracks that welcome you inside the self-titled debut album by Gravity Kills, lies the key to interpreting the entire work. The four from St. Louis talk to us about alienation, well reconstructed in the music, continually teetering between artificial noise, loops, and healthy muscular riffs, like valves of release in the cybernetic web. However, Gravity Kills reveal themselves to be incapable of maintaining their initial promises, and as you go through the various tracks, you realize you’ve absorbed very little of the entire work, which nonetheless is enjoyable to listen to, and contains small gems like "Guilty," "Blame," "Down," and "Inside." It's easy to reconstruct the roots of their sound: KMFDM, Ministry, are the names that immediately come to the listener's ear, but going further you can also recognize echoes of Depeche Mode. The comparison is to be made with Filter and Nine Inch Nails, with whom they share John Fryer as co-producer. However, unlike these big names, they lack much of the experimental side: the songs tend to have a too linear and predictable development, the structure of the tracks is never questioned, as well as the sounds and effects, which over time become standardized and tend to be recycled piece by piece. Certainly more suited for the role of a soundtrack for action/science fiction films (and indeed some of their tracks appear in the soundtracks of Seven and Mortal Kombat), the album takes on an almost Hollywood flavor, easy to consume, but also of short duration.

Recommended for fans of Nine Inch Nails and lovers of industrial rock in general.

Summary by Bot

Gravity Kills’ self-titled debut offers a mix of synthetic noise and muscular guitar riffs reflecting themes of alienation. While the album features standout tracks like "Guilty" and "Blame" and echoes bands like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry, it tends to follow predictable song structures without much experimental growth. Suited as an action/sci-fi soundtrack, this album is enjoyable but somewhat limited in scope.

01   Forward (01:31)

[Instrumental]

02   Guilty (04:02)

Behind closed doors your words ring hollow
What you said they'd be
What behavior?
Who are you, but I like it
Now I'm done with nothing new
Sometimes green sometimes blue

And I'm guilty
And I'm guilty
And I'm guilty
And I'm guilty
And you're guilty too

He, hey, hey I'm guilty
And you're guilty too
Hey, hey, hey, hey

I'll tell you something, something new
You're hearing nothing, nothing true
You're killing me, I'm killing you
And I'm guilty too

One two three
I found you out so easily
One two three
I found in you what I found in me
The time is wrong, the time is right
Be careful who you kill tonight

And I'm melting
And I'm melting
And I'm melting
And I'm melting
And I'm melting in you

Hey, hey, hey I'm guilty
And you're guilty too
Hey, hey, hey, hey

One and one and one makes three
One and one why don't you see
I'm killing you, you're killing me
Can't you set me free

Inside out,
I can't describe it
What you do to me
Inside out
I cannot hide it
Looking right through me
Now I've reached the living end
Pointing fingers to defend

And I'm guilty
And I'm guilty
And I'm guilty
And I'm guilty
And you're guilty too

Hey, hey, hey I'm guilty
And you're guilty too
Hey, hey, hey, hey

I'll tell you something, something new
You're hearing nothing, nothing true
You're killing me, I'm killing you
And I'm guilty too

03   Blame (04:35)

I thought I could hear you
Echoing words of denial
Careful not to feel you near me
Clawing out at what you call life
Hold on to what you want, hold on to what you have
Hold on to where you are, hold on to where...
I face the change, I've tasted pain, digging a hole, now take the blame
I fell aside, I cast away, covered in shame, now take the blame
Thought I was beneath you
Crawling in your bed of lies
You infected me with envy
Tiny daggers in my eye
Hold on to what you want, hold on to what you have
Hold on to where you are, hold on to where...
I face the change, I've tasted pain, digging a hole, now take the blame
I fell aside, I cast away, covered in shame, now take the blame
Thought I could believe you selling me your big surprise
Only needing one more victim, tearing down your one disguise
Hold on to what you want, hold on to what you have
Hold on to where you are, hold on to where...
I face the change, I've tasted pain, digging a hole, now take the blame
I fell aside, I cast away, covered in shame, now take the blame

04   Down (04:10)

05   Here (04:20)

06   Enough (04:16)

I love the thrill, I love the scene
Imagine you in the white light
So beautiful, you watch me bleed
You're stabbing me from inside now

Kneel down and tell me about your world
Tell me something that I don't know
You know nothing about the world around you

(Chorus)
It's not enough - broken in two
It's not enough - speaking the truth
It's not enough - watching me bleed
It's not enough - torn in between
It's not enough

I'm watching you, distorted view
So beautiful in the white light
It's make believe, all that you see
It's haunting you from inside now

Kneel down and tell me about your world
Show me something inside your world
You know nothing about the world around you

(Chorus)

Sometimes in me, you are the seed
A dying need in the white light
The simple truth, it speaks to me
It's screaming out from inside now

Kneel down and tell me about your world
Tell me something that I don't know
You know nothing about the world around you

(Chorus x 2)

07   Inside (02:53)

08   Goodbye (03:11)

In a mirror of you, reflections of you, you're showing what you
Feel like inside, Need the power of two, just me and you
An image that you hold in your mind. Sometimes you're
wrong and then sometimes you're right, You don't expect me
to put up a fight. I'm sick and tired of all of your lies
I'm sick and tired and I'm saying goodbye.
I don't need this poison, I don't need control, I don't need forgiveness
I don't need you--You're a shadow of me
what I used to be. I'm fading as the light dims
outside, I know what you need, because I can
see I'm taking over thoughts in your mind. Sometimes
you're wrong and then sometimes you're right, You're in
the dark so I'll turn on the light. I'm sick and tired
of all your lies. I'm fucking tired and I'm saying goodbye
I don't need this poison, I don't need control
I don't need forgiveness, I don't need you--
I don't need this poison, I don't need control
I don't need forgiveness, I don't need you
