Here, by choice, I am reviewing an album from the extraordinary project called Firebird, which includes none other than Bill Steer on guitar/vocals, Leo Smee on bass/organ, and Ludwig Witt on drums; the more observant will have already noticed that in this case, we are dealing with a supergroup. The first, in fact, was the guitarist of the greatest death-metal band of all time: Carcass; the second, bassist of the most recent great doom-metal band: Cathedral; and the third, drummer of Spiritual Beggars, a band with a couple of fabulous stoner rock albums under its belt.
What the three propose, however, is not metal, but rather a 70's style hard-rock that would make many famous bands of that era jealous.
Steer surprises with his voice, which fits well into the very bell-bottom atmosphere, but above all with his sharp riffs that testify to his versatility even when engaging with a genre certainly not familiar. The rhythm section is the strong point of this album; it indeed feels like being catapulted into the midst of the 70s, in a jam session among friends who gather to strum some good hard-rock music. The background organ is noticeable at times, as in the opening track "Meantime," where Steer's riff dominates.
Other interesting episodes are "Bollard," a slower but equally captivating track, and the Traffic cover "Stranger to Himself": not bad at all.
An agglomeration of heavy-rock sounds for discerning ears, where a full-bodied bass, dry guitar, and dirty drums intersect perfectly.

Some might not like seeing sacred monsters of extreme metal dealing with more serious and pleasant-to-the-ear music, but these are the real talents around, those who do not get stuck in a single genre but have the courage to challenge themselves, often achieving excellent results.
Bravo Steer and Co., hats off.

Recommended for lovers of that "old," dirty sound where the beer flows freely, but also for new stoned-listeners.
Eclectic.

It's not you choosing, but them choosing you.

There are no more masterpieces but only good music that is worth listening to.
