Hard Rock! Hard Fuckin' Rock! These are the Extreme! A voice and a guitar that smash, a pounding drum, and a bass that grooves! Before being labeled as Funky Rock (or metal) with "Pornograffitti", they were hailed as the successors of Van Halen with this album. There are some influences, sure, but the album is something entirely different.
Guitar and voice are the elements that stand out, pumped-up and unmistakably Hard songs, vague traces of Country and Blues, and superior choruses. Melodic choruses alternated with angry verses, and vice versa. This album kicks ass!
It all starts with a harmonica and a riff that immediately lets you know what you're dealing with. There are angry songs and a couple of slow, fantastic tracks like "Watching, Waiting".
This was Extreme's first album, and perhaps the most original. A bit raw compared to their later successful productions.
The best part of the album is the middle section, with five great tracks and the breathtaking solos of that crazy Nuno Bettencourt. (they truly leave you speechless, yet are very listenable)
If you want some good Hard Rock, Extreme bridge the '80s and '90s in a very original and innovative way. The style is there, it's not quite funky like the next album and... I like it! YEAH!
Furthermore, it ends with a track that's insane! Live, they ROCK (in the few videos available), and they also rock their songs!
Demerit notes: I don't know, the quality is slightly lower than the others, but it's a debut album, so!
If you've already listened to "Pornograffitti" or later and turned up your nose a bit... listen to this! You'll like it more!
One ... Two ... Tree..... Do you wanna playyyyyyyyyyyyy?! (fiiiiiii wha wha)
What distinguishes the band from dozens of others is the addition of many funk elements, which give their music an irresistible rhythm and groove.
Nuno shows he has a truly unique touch and charisma, not offering misplaced virtuosity or totally self-serving, but favoring feeling and melody.
