LA RECENSIONE

The sea dog wears its hair tied up.
And has doe-like eyes, as some magazine from 1966 might comment in the captions to a photo portraying it.
Its voice is thin, almost childlike.
Fragile.
It does not bark at the moon. Rather, it whines, sometimes slyly, on the deserted beach. Out of season.
Or remains, as if in a drowsy state, watching the waves under a mild sun.
Captured in a hypnosis, projected into the past. Which, in a state of uncertain bliss, dissolves in the present: a breeze coming from who knows where, delivering the scent of a distant spring, but surprisingly still here, now.

A seashell, placed to the ear.
To hear the clear sound of acoustic guitars blending with that of a small keyboard, while ethereal choruses whisper something, never interrupting the soft, somewhat naïve ecstasy that even strings, here and there, accommodate.
Little songs.
Simple.

Where a homely version of Burt Bacharach peeks in when Phil Spector is absent
And that little voice, which at other times would have irritated you, is a drop of nectar when what you desire is just the momentary relief of a temporal oasis.

A lightness that yesterday, perhaps, you would have labeled as sappy.
But that is the closest thing you can imagine today, to the suspended state between wakefulness and sleep.
That state capable of awakening tiny memories, probably not even yours. But vivid and detailed as if they were.
A state from which you only detach to tidy up the small terrace, which in winter has turned into a cluttered storage room.
But today it's spring, and you want that small space to be clean and welcoming. You want to sip a glass with her, caressed by the uncertain light that heralds the sunset, while the background buzzing of this contemporary city disappears for a while. To remain suspended, as naïve as little songs, in this spring of ’66.

“El perro del mar” is the curious name that Sarah Assbring, a young Swedish musician, has chosen to present herself to the world. With this name, she has released her debut, self-titled album, recently published by Hybris.
Among the recent records, the farthest from the coordinates within which my usual listening habits generally move: light and unlikely, short (33’) it has found a gap, gently, to deposit here the tiny, simple paintings crafted by the sea dog.
And for now, I do not wish to avert my gaze from the surfaces, crossed by soft colors, of these watercolors veined, at times, with sweet melancholy.
Age tricks, you say?
Listen to the samples.
See you inside another record, I'll return to the Swedish drowsiness.

Tracklist Lyrics

01   Candy (03:22)

Oh I think it's so hard trying to figure out what they want me to do

I've spent most of my days
Only to deny what I know inside is true

Oh I think it's so hard trying to get around what they want me to be

I've done just about all trying to care About everyone else except me

I'm going forth to buy me some candy
(She's going forth to buy her some candy)
I'm going forth to buy me some candy
(She's goin forth to buy her some candy now)

On a saturday night
(On a saturday night)
On a saturday night

I'm going forth to buy me some candy
(She's going forth to buy her some candy)

Oh I make it so hard gettin clear about
what it is I want me to do

One day I'll get myself out in the sunshine
Then I'll get rid of the blues

I'm going forth to buy me some candy
(She's going forth to buy her some candy)
I'm going forth to buy me some candy
(She's going forth to buy some candy now)

On a saturday night
(On a saturday night)
On a saturday night
(niight)

I'm going forth to buy me some candy
(She's going forth to buy her some candy)
I'm going forth to buy me some candy
(She's going forth to buy her some candy now)
