Many years ago, I read this poem that, along with the book, imprinted itself in my mind. Today is the right day to reread it. You three who live safe in your warm homes, you who find, returning in the evening, warm food and friendly faces: consider if this is a man who works in the mud who knows no peace who fights for half a loaf who dies for a yes or for a no. Consider if this is a woman, without hair and without name without strength to remember empty the eyes and cold the womb like a frog in winter. Meditate that this has been: I command you these words. Engrave them in your hearts while sitting at home and walking on the way, lying down and getting up; repeat them to your children. Or your house may collapse, disease may hinder you, your children may turn their faces away from you.
