Nik Bärtsch - Modul 15 (Switzerland, 2015)

Nik Bärtsch is a Swiss pianist, composer, bandleader, record producer, and author based in Zurich. Repetition and change are central themes in Nik Bärtsch's music and performance practice. His work is an intersection of contemporary music, jazz, and funk influences. The use of repetition, as well as the structures based on intertwining elements in his music, suggests the influence of minimalist music, particularly that of Steve Reich. Bärtsch is influenced by Eastern philosophy and James Brown. He has also shown a keen interest in the works of American composers John Cage and Morton Feldman. Fascinated by Japanese Zen culture, his musical attitude is influenced, among other things, by his interest in the Japanese martial art (Aikido) and Zen.

Gwakasonné - Algérie 62 (Guadaloupe, 1984)

Gwakasonné is the ecstatic articulation of Robert Oumaou's artistic and political vision, a unified expression of his interests in American jazz, pre-colonial rhythms, the independence of Guadaloupe, and Creole poetics. Over the course of three albums, all released in the 1980s, Robert has led an ever-evolving cast of musicians, a venerable group of avant-jazz pioneers. Creole protest folk, electronics, ambient atmospheres, music of the African diaspora, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and spiritual jazz blend together in this timeless classic.

Dafer Youssef - Soupir Eternel (Tunisia, 2006)

I might seem biased because I had the pleasure of seeing the artist mentioned above live in one of the most beautiful concerts of my life, but when you perform a thousand concerts worldwide, acclaimed and in demand everywhere, and play with artists of the caliber of Markus Stockhausen, Jon Hassell, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, and our Paolo Fresu, it must mean something.

Dhafer Youssef is one of the leading contemporary specialists in the oud, the fretless Middle Eastern lute, prevalent in the Maghreb, Turkey, Persia, and the Arab countries, which he has helped liberate from its traditional role and bring into modernity. Since the late 1990s, he has established himself as one of the prominent ambassadors of the musical encounter between East and West, of certain world music linked to jazz and improvisational music, extending to Brazilian and Caribbean music and to sinuous and elusive Indian melodies. Supported by a remarkable band of musicians, the sound of his unique instrument and his voice blend masterfully with today’s musical technology, incorporating sampled sounds, synthesizers, and electronic percussion.
