This album is a real punch in the balls, no doubt about it... oh man, what a burden. Not bad, but you really need to be in the mood for it. Much better, way better is the new direction of Anathema, imho. At that time, the English were like less inspired Opeth.

And who gets offended? The masterpieces are others, for me.. this is 'simply' an excellent album. Nothing more and nothing less. I fully confirm my judgment after some time and listening.
p.s. inexperience, tell your sister! ;-) ha ha ha! trust me..

what a great, absolutely fantastic album. And who would have expected it when it was kindly offered to me.. Listening to it, it's hard to believe that this is the debut record of a 22-year-old boy. I'm sorry for the good old Tom, but I think this is destined to become my personal #1 among the releases of 2004. A must-have.

Banalically, one of the (3-4) most beautiful albums of the 90s. Also, imho, the most beautiful debut album in the whole history of rock (oh yes, better than Piper.... better than Iron Maiden, better than EL&P etc.) Am I exaggerating? I don't think so. There are some objectively lesser tracks, and it lacks that cohesion that the band will find completely only on the equally splendid successor, but this album is a masterpiece, end of story. Alive, Release, Black, Jeremy. Just these 4 titles are enough to declare it a cornerstone in the history of rock (grunge or not, doesn't matter much... musically speaking, grunge means nothing). Some assertions in the reviews mean absolutely nothing and speak for themselves (see the one about McCready, or the one on compositional imagination). Overall, the reviews are decent and brave, although the album in question deserves much more, in my opinion. (I won't do it because I am a bit biased when it comes to PJ and it would probably turn into a series of eulogies...)

wonderful! sincere, moving, and damn true. really a splendid album, one of the most beautiful pages written in the 90's in Seattle.

then I probably won't like it, since the best of the previous one was undoubtedly represented by No one knows (the absolute peak of the album), First it giveth, and the title track, at least in my humble opinion. The single, by the way, isn't bad, though it's far from making me tear my hair out. I don't know... for sure, I'm not buying it but waiting to rip it with calm.

just tell me one thing... does the voice suck as much as that of Greg Puciato from the praised (? by whom?!) Dillinger Escape Plan? Because if the answer is - even just partially - yes, I don't want to hear them. Why must we ruin beautiful music with such low-level vocals, I wonder... I repeat, this is just my sheer curiosity, I don't know Isis but they intrigue me. The review is very well done, though.

this I miss... for now. but I plan to fill the gap, sooner or later. The AI remain my favorites from the Seattle scene, after the PJ (out of competition).
great review anyway.
